Admittedly, a black-and-white silent movie may not hold instant appeal, but The Artist was a sensation on the European film festival circuit and is now being heralded as one of best films of the year. Harvey Weinstein was so charmed by the French production, his company snapped up the US rights.
Set in Hollywood in 1927, during his latest premiere matinee idol George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) helps flapper Peppy Miller (Berenice Bejo) get her big break by allowing her to pose alongside him.
With the advent of the ‘talkies’ Valentin’s career plummets, while Peppy embraces sound and rises to leading lady status.
The Artist opens this weekend.
