Profile: Man Repeller’s Leandra Medine

We had a brief chat with in-demand blogger, the irrepressibly fashion-forward Leandra Medine of fame…

What’s been your favourite ‘Man Repelling’ look of 2011?

Tea length skirts, denim jackets and copious neon.

Do you have any item of clothing that holds particular sentimental value?
I have an old, arm-padded (yes, arm; the pads extend beyond the shoulder) velvet
Galliano jacket that my grandmother wore to my parents’ wedding. It has little
crystals all over it too.

What was your style like as a teenager?

I went to a fairly religious Yeshiva day school so my style was less about style,
more about covering my knees and shoulders so that I wouldn’t get sent home for
looking like a hooker. I swore I’d never wear another maxi skirt, but here I am in pleats.

What’s been your biggest ever fashion faux pas?

I had a denim skirt in middle school. I wore it with tights and Uggs and thought
I was the shit.

Who do you deem fellow ‘Man Repellers’?
Daphne Guinness, Alexa Chung (below), Vika Gazinskaya and my mom.

What would be a sartorial dating deal-breaker for you?

Well, if he were to say something like, “Oh, the Balenciaga coat! Almost bought that for myself!” Conversely, I’d saved up for a pair of Proenza Schouler booties a couple of seasons ago and when I could finally snatch them, my date asked me why I was wearing space boots. Schmuck.

If you could be any celebrity for a day, who would you be?

Does Taylor Tomasi Hill count? I just want to gauge her psyche for a few hours so I
could maybe, just maybe, layer my clothes the way she does.

What are you currently reading?
I’m reading lots Fran Lebowitz (right).

And who are you listening to?

Anything by Lana del Rey.

Any trend you’re excited about for 2012?
I’m looking forward to bloomers as pants for Spring!

What’s your ultimate ambition?

Short term: front row at Chanel’s show. I’d also love to start styling runway shows
for some of my favorite designers: Thakoon, Prabal Gurung and rag & bone, but
longer term: multiple hit books and maybe work as a producer on Man Repeller -
The Movie? Hey, it could happen!
