For their Spring Summer 2012 issue, Vs. Magazine released six covers featuring Julianne Moore, Erin Wasson, Elizabeth Olsen, Helena Christensen, Rosie Huntington Whiteley and Shailene Woodley.
New York-based filmmaker and photographer Jenna Elizabeth shot Erin Wasson’s cover and editorial, along with an accompanying film.
She also directed Julianne Moore in a Vs. film called Knowing Remembers, which will appear on vsmagazinelive.com shortly (see the teaser above).
Jenna Elizabeth discusses her Vs. projects with rag & bone…
“The theme of Vs. Magazine is intimacy and to me nothing is more intimate than being alone in one’s head, and being able to disconnect from oneself. For Julianne, I was inspired by a passage from William Faulkner’s Light in August.
Essentially I wanted to visually represent the passing of time through shadows, and the disconnection of oneself. Memory stays within you, there is a permanence of impulses, and actions. That can be quite haunting. So I played with the repetition of the edit, her self scrutiny in a mirror, juxtaposed against these moments of isolation in empty bedrooms. Stenfert Charles, who did the music for Martha Marcy May Marlene, did my score. Their music really took the piece to the next level.”
Erin’s film, she reveals, “is based around the idea of the Heimlich maneuver. The film is more about the deconstruction of power in female dynamic relationships. It is a reoccurring theme in my work, but I try to add a bit of humor to it.”
